Playground: The Hallie Flanagan Project

A World Premiere production of a new play by Mattie Brickman, commissioned by Vassar College as part of its sesquicentennial celebration

Hallie Flanagan is perhaps most famous for heading up the Federal Theater Project, which put actors back to work during the Great Depression, and for being the first person to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. In 1926, however —a decade earlier—she was in Russia, falling in love with new theater, new ideas, and a certain scientist. Playground visits Hallie at the beginning of her career, as a Vassar professor and in Russia, as she navigates life, love, and politics, discovering how the things that shape us also come back to haunt us.
