The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity

Ladies and gentlemen, in this corner, weighing in with a unique combo of powerful physicality and wickedly smart comedy, please make some noise for this vibrantly entertaining play about – wait for it – professional wrestling. “Mace” Guerra is a really good professional wrestler, but he isn’t the champ – that’s the impossibly charismatic Chad Deity. When Mace discovers an Indian-American Brooklyn kid whose charisma rivals Chad’s, he decides to recruit him as the perfect foil. But when their rivalry is used to exploit racial stereotypes and raise ratings, all three men find themselves fighting for more than the title belt. Winner of the 2011 Obie for Best New American Play and a Pulitzer Prize finalist, this no-holds-barred comedy slams together thrilling spectacle, incredible characters and political allegory for an invigorating theatrical experience.

“And the Handy Award Goes To: In a category filled with impressive work, I’m partial to the vibrancy of what Jen Wineman brought to the unique take on current social commentary in Kristofer Diaz’s “The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity.” The show had rhythm, a sense of choreography (fitting for a show set in a wrestling ring), strong performances and a really punchy storytelling style.” —Jay Handelman, Sarasota Herald Tribune
